Country guide

Belgium

Low tuition, excellent universities, and three language communities that each run their own system.

  • Study applications
  • Work visa, if you already hold an offer

Belgium has strong universities at genuinely low tuition. KU Leuven and Ghent are well regarded internationally, and there is a substantial English taught master's offer, particularly in engineering, bioscience and European studies.

The complication is that Belgium is three communities, Flemish, French and German speaking, each running its own education administration. Which one your university sits in changes the application process, the recognition procedure for your degree and sometimes the documents required.

Graduates can apply for a search year to look for work or start a business, and Brussels is the administrative centre of the European Union, which creates a specific labour market that is worth understanding if that is your field.

We cover Belgium for study applications. We do not run a job search here, though we will prepare your work permit file if an employer has already made you an offer.

What it costs

Our fee, and everybody else's

Two different piles of money. The second one is almost always larger, and a quote that does not mention it is not cheaper, it is less complete.

Already have a job offer?
We support work abroad for any country on this site, whether or not you already hold an offer. Where you have one, the work is the visa file. Where you do not, it is route selection, eligibility scoring and the search itself.

These are starting prices. Every package and every exclusion is on the pricing page, at the same figures quoted on a call.

Who is being hired

Occupations in demand in Belgium

Shortage lists are set by region: Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels each publish their own, and they differ.
  • IT and software engineering
  • Nurses and healthcare
  • Engineers, industrial and electromechanical
  • Technical trades and electricians
  • Logistics and transport

Read this before you plan around it
Being in a shortage occupation is not eligibility. It usually changes a salary threshold, a points score or a processing queue, and it never removes the need to qualify. These lists are also revised often, so treat this as where demand has been concentrated rather than a promise about today.

Refusals

Why applications get refused, and what helps

Almost all of these are mechanical rather than substantive, which means almost all of them are preventable by somebody reading the file carefully before it is submitted.
  1. 01

Documents legalised for the wrong community

    What helps
Confirm the procedure for the Flemish, French or German speaking community your institution belongs to before starting legalisation.

  2. 02

Means not evidenced in an accepted form

    What helps
Belgium accepts specific forms of guarantee. Use one of them rather than a general bank statement.

  3. 03

    Late start on document legalisation

    What helps
Apostille, legalisation and translation together take weeks. Begin as soon as you have transcripts.

Immigration rules change constantly, and a page like this is a starting point rather than an authority. Every figure here is approximate and every claim links to the government source that governs it. Before you commit money to any of it, check the current position, or ask us to check it against your profile.

Comparing this against somewhere else

The cheapest sticker price is very often not the cheapest total. Every country page carries the same two cost tabs, so they can be compared line for line.
