Country guide

Germany

Three work routes, low or no university tuition, and a language requirement that decides everything.

  • Study applications
  • Work abroad, with or without an offer

Germany is the destination this company knows best, and the one where the honest advice most often differs from the advice people are given.

It has three distinct work routes, an ageing workforce in exactly the occupations Indian professionals hold, and public universities that charge little or no tuition. It also has a language requirement that people consistently underestimate, and a bureaucracy that is fair, slow and entirely unmoved by how urgent your situation is.

The single best predictor of whether someone's move to Germany goes well is how seriously they took German in the year before they arrived.

What it costs

Our fee, and everybody else's

Two different piles of money. The second one is almost always larger, and a quote that does not mention it is not cheaper, it is less complete.

Starting prices for the services we run for Germany. Every package has a published price and an exclusions list, and the scope is agreed in writing before you pay anything.

Already have a job offer?
We support work abroad for any country on this site, whether or not you already hold an offer. Where you have one, the work is the visa file. Where you do not, it is route selection, eligibility scoring and the search itself.

These are starting prices. Every package and every exclusion is on the pricing page, at the same figures quoted on a call.

Who is being hired

Occupations in demand in Germany

The deepest and best documented shortage list in Europe, driven by an ageing workforce. The Skilled Immigration Act was rewritten specifically to fill it.
  • Nurses and elderly care specialists
  • IT and software specialists
  • Mechanical, electrical and automotive engineers
  • Electricians and industrial technicians
  • Doctors, especially outside the big cities
  • Welders, plumbers and HVAC technicians
  • Civil engineers and construction supervisors
  • Logistics and rail specialists

Read this before you plan around it
Being in a shortage occupation is not eligibility. It usually changes a salary threshold, a points score or a processing queue, and it never removes the need to qualify. These lists are also revised often, so treat this as where demand has been concentrated rather than a promise about today.

Routes

Ways into Germany, and what each one needs

Every route links to the government page that actually governs it. Rules and figures change, so check the source before you act.

Route 01

Opportunity Card, the Chancenkarte

People with a recognised qualification who want to search for work from inside Germany rather than from India.

Requirements

  • A recognised qualification of at least two years, or a university degree
  • German at A1 or English at B2 as the minimum entry condition
  • At least six points on the published criteria, unless your qualification is fully recognised
  • Proof you can support yourself, normally a blocked account or a declaration of commitment

Realistic timeline

Three to six months from starting to arriving, if documents cooperate

Make it in Germany, Opportunity Card

Route 02

EU Blue Card

Graduates who already hold a German job offer meeting the salary threshold.

Requirements

  • A university degree recognised or comparable to a German one
  • A binding job offer or employment contract
  • A salary at or above the current threshold, which is lower for shortage occupations
  • No general German requirement for the permit, though employers set their own

Realistic timeline

Six to twelve weeks from application, once the file is complete

Make it in Germany, EU Blue Card

Route 03

Ausbildung, vocational training

People willing to retrain in a paid German apprenticeship, usually in healthcare, care or the skilled trades.

Requirements

  • German at B1, and normally B2 for healthcare and care roles
  • A training contract with a recognised provider
  • Recognised school leaving qualifications for the training in question
  • Acceptance that you earn a training allowance for two to three years

Realistic timeline

Twelve to eighteen months, because intakes run on a calendar

Make it in Germany, vocational training

Route 04

People who want a German qualification, and who can fund living costs while studying.

Requirements

  • An admission letter from a German university
  • Proof of funds for the first year, normally in a blocked account
  • The language of instruction at the level the course requires, German or English
  • Health insurance valid in Germany from the day you arrive

The bigger picture

Costs that are not fees at all

Tuition, housing and the things that decide whether a plan is affordable in the second year as well as the first.
Costs of moving to Germany, with a note on each.
Proof of funds, blocked accountThis is your own money, returned to you monthly after you arrive. It is not a fee. The required amount is revised each year, so check the current figure on the Federal Foreign Office site before budgeting.Set annually, currently the largest single cost
National visa feePaid to the German mission in India, in rupees at their exchange rate on the day.Published per visa type
Document translation and apostilleDepends on how many documents you hold and how many need a sworn translator. Degrees, transcripts, birth certificate and marriage certificate are the usual set.₹8,000 to ₹25,000 typically
Language course and examinationOur German course prices are published. The Goethe or telc examination fee is paid to the examination centre.Course from ₹15,000, examination fee separate
Health insurancePublic insurance is a percentage of income once employed. Before that you need travel or expatriate cover.Monthly, from arrival
Flights and first monthA flight, a deposit of two or three months rent, and the first month itself. The rental market in Berlin and Munich is genuinely difficult and takes longer than people plan for.₹40,000 to ₹120,000

Refusals

Why applications get refused, and what helps

Almost all of these are mechanical rather than substantive, which means almost all of them are preventable by somebody reading the file carefully before it is submitted.
  1. 01

The degree is not recognised in Anabin, and nobody checked first

    What helps
Check Anabin before anything else. It determines which route you are on and it is free to look up. If your university is not listed, or is listed without the status you need, that changes the plan rather than ending it.

  2. 02

Proof of funds that appeared too recently, or from an undocumented source

    What helps
Fund the blocked account from an account with a documented history, and keep the paper trail for where the money came from. A large deposit shortly before applying reads as borrowed money.

  3. 03

German below the level the route actually needs

    What helps
Match the certificate to the route rather than to what a course was convenient to take. A1 for family reunification, B1 for most Ausbildung, B2 for regulated professions.

  4. 04

The purpose of stay is not credible at the appointment

    What helps
Be able to explain, in your own words, why this route, why Germany and why now. The interview is short and an inconsistent answer is expensive.

  5. 05

    Documents that contradict each other

    What helps
Compare your payslips, reference letters, contracts and LinkedIn profile against each other before submitting. Officers do, and a date that does not match is the most common avoidable problem in any file.

  6. 06

    Incomplete file at the appointment

    What helps
Take the mission's own current checklist, in their order, and check every item off physically the night before. Missing one document normally means a new appointment, which can mean months.

Immigration rules change constantly, and a page like this is a starting point rather than an authority. Every figure here is approximate and every claim links to the government source that governs it. Before you commit money to any of it, check the current position, or ask us to check it against your profile.
