The Netherlands built its higher education system around English taught programmes long before the rest of continental Europe did, and it shows. There are hundreds of master's degrees taught entirely in English, at universities that rank well, for tuition that sits well below the UK, Australia or the United States.
The other reason to look here is the orientation year. Graduates of a Dutch degree can apply for a residence permit that gives them a full year to look for work, with unrestricted access to the labour market during it. That is a meaningfully better position than arriving on a permit tied to a single employer.
The honest caveat is housing. Dutch student accommodation is genuinely scarce in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Delft, and universities say so on their own websites. Arrange it before you accept a place, not after.

Read this before you plan around it
Being in a shortage occupation is not eligibility. It usually changes a salary threshold, a points score or a processing queue, and it never removes the need to qualify. These lists are also revised often, so treat this as where demand has been concentrated rather than a promise about today.

Ways into Netherlands, and what each one needs
Route 01
Student residence permit for a master's
People applying to an English taught master's at a Dutch research university or university of applied sciences.
Requirements
- An offer from a recognised sponsor institution, which applies for the permit on your behalf
- Evidence of sufficient funds at the published monthly figure for the year
- English at the level the programme requires, usually IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0
- Valid health insurance and a passport covering the study period

Nine to fourteen months. Many programmes close applications in January or February for a September intake
Route 02
Orientation year for graduates
Graduates of a Dutch degree who want a year to find skilled work without an employer sponsoring them first.
Requirements
- A completed Dutch master's or bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualifying award
- Application within three years of graduating
- The permit allows any work during the year, with no separate work authorisation needed
