Country guide
Sweden
A very large English taught offer, strong engineering research, and a residence permit that now asks for maintenance across the whole course.
- Study applications
- Work visa, if you already hold an offer
Sweden teaches an unusually large share of its master's programmes in English, and its engineering and computer science departments are genuinely strong. Applications run through a single national portal with one deadline, which makes the process simpler than most of Europe but far less forgiving if you miss it.
Non EU students pay tuition, set by each university rather than nationally, and there are university and government scholarship schemes that cover part or all of it. Those are competitive and close early.
The maintenance requirement is the thing to plan for. Sweden expects you to show funds for each month of study, and for a two year master's it has to be shown for the full period rather than year by year, which is a larger single sum than most destinations ask for.
We cover Sweden for study applications. We do not run a job search here, though we will prepare your work permit file if an employer has already made you an offer.

Already have a job offer?
We support work abroad for any country on this site, whether or not you already hold an offer. Where you have one, the work is the visa file. Where you do not, it is route selection, eligibility scoring and the search itself.
These are starting prices. Every package and every exclusion is on the pricing page, at the same figures quoted on a call.

Read this before you plan around it
Being in a shortage occupation is not eligibility. It usually changes a salary threshold, a points score or a processing queue, and it never removes the need to qualify. These lists are also revised often, so treat this as where demand has been concentrated rather than a promise about today.

The bigger picture
Costs that are not fees at all
| Tuition for non EU studentsEngineering and design programmes are typically at the higher end. Scholarships exist at both university and national level. | Set per university and per programme |
|---|---|
| Maintenance requirementFor a two year master's this must be shown for the full period, which is a larger single amount than most countries require. | A published monthly figure, for the whole course |
| Application portal feeOne of the few systems where applying to several universities costs no more than applying to one. | A single fee, whatever the number of programmes |
| HousingSome universities guarantee housing for international students and some do not. Confirm before accepting. | Scarce in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Lund |
| Living costsSweden is not a cheap country. The low headline tuition at some programmes does not offset this. | High, particularly in Stockholm |
Refusals
Why applications get refused, and what helps
- 01
Maintenance not shown for the full study period
What helps
Show the published monthly figure multiplied across every month of the programme, in your own account, held rather than recently deposited. - 02
Funds transferred in shortly before applying
What helps
Sweden looks at how long the money has been there. A large recent transfer with no explanation is treated as borrowed. - 03
Missing the single national deadline
What helps
There is essentially one application window a year. Work backwards from it, because there is no second chance until the next cycle.
Immigration rules change constantly, and a page like this is a starting point rather than an authority. Every figure here is approximate and every claim links to the government source that governs it. Before you commit money to any of it, check the current position, or ask us to check it against your profile.
