What Duolingo is, and what it is used for

The Duolingo English Test is taken at home on your own computer, takes about an hour, and returns a result in a couple of days. It is by a distance the cheapest of the tests on this page.

It is adaptive, so the questions get harder or easier depending on how you answer, and it uses question types that appear nowhere else. Practice with the actual formats matters more here than on any other test.

The catch is acceptance. A large and growing number of universities take it. A large number still do not, and immigration authorities are more conservative than universities. Confirm it on your specific university's own admissions page before you book anything.

  • Applicants whose entire shortlist accepts the test, checked on each university's own page
  • Anyone on a tight budget or a tight deadline
  • People who need a result in days rather than weeks
  • Applicants adding a backup score alongside another test

What the weeks actually look like

This is the plan the batch follows. It is built to be survivable alongside a full time job, which is the constraint most course outlines ignore.

  1. Week 1

    The formats, all of them

    Every adaptive question type, practised until none of them is a surprise. This is most of the value of the course.

  2. Week 2

    Interactive writing and speaking

    The longer production tasks, with sample review and feedback. Plus the rules on your test environment, which people fail on.

  3. Week 3

    Two timed attempts, then book

    Two timed mock attempts with feedback, and a final check of which universities on your list accept the score.

    • Has sat the test they teach, at the band they teach to

    Trainers here teach the test they have personally sat, because band descriptors read very differently once you have been marked against them. Batches stay small enough that speaking practice is actually possible.
