What German is, and what it is used for

German is taught in four levels following the Common European Framework of Reference: A1, A2, B1 and B2. Each level is a genuine step, not a marketing tier, and each one unlocks something specific on a German visa or professional route.

This is the part of the service that matters most, because German is the single largest lever on every German route. It is also the thing people postpone, and postponing it is what turns a one year plan into a three year one.

Our batches are aligned to the Goethe-Institut and telc examination formats, which are the certificates German authorities and employers actually recognise.

Who needs it

  • Anyone on the Opportunity Card route who needs a sixth point, where German is usually the cheapest one to get
  • Spouses joining a partner in Germany, where A1 is often required for family reunification
  • Anyone considering Ausbildung, which normally needs B1 and often B2
  • Nurses, carers and other regulated professionals, where professional recognition normally requires B2
  • People with an English speaking German job offer who have realised that the immigration office, the landlord and the doctor do not speak English

CEFR levels

Each level opens a specific door in Germany

This is the table nobody publishes, and it is the reason people postpone German until it costs them a year. Levels are cumulative, so you cannot skip to B1 because that is the one your route needs.

A1

Beginner

10 weeks, 50 hours

A1, beginner

What you can do

Introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions about where you live and people you know, and handle numbers, dates and simple transactions.

What this level unlocks

  • Family reunification for a spouse joining a partner in Germany, which normally requires A1
  • The minimum German entry condition for the Opportunity Card, where A1 German or B2 English is required
  • Being able to do anything at all in a German office without an interpreter

Not enough for
Working in German, an Ausbildung place, or professional recognition. A1 is the door, not the room.

A2

Elementary

10 weeks, 50 hours

A2, elementary

What you can do

Handle routine situations that need a simple, direct exchange of information: the doctor, the landlord, the immigration office, and describing your own background and needs.

What this level unlocks

  • Meeting the language condition for several family and residence routes that ask for more than A1
  • Additional points on the Opportunity Card points table, since German above the entry level scores
  • Living in Germany without every practical task becoming an ordeal

Not enough for
Most Ausbildung places, any healthcare role, and any job where you speak to customers.

B1

Independent

12 weeks, 60 hours

B1, independent

What you can do

Deal with most situations likely to arise where German is spoken, write straightforward connected text, write a formal email, and explain your opinions and plans.

What this level unlocks

  • Most Ausbildung places, which normally set B1 as the entry requirement
  • A meaningful jump in Opportunity Card points, because language is one of the heavier scoring categories
  • Many skilled trade and hospitality roles
  • The usual language threshold for permanent settlement in Germany, alongside the other conditions

Not enough for
Professional recognition in a regulated profession such as nursing, which normally requires B2.

B2

Professional

12 weeks, 60 hours

B2, professional

What you can do

Follow technical discussion in your own field, hold a fluent conversation with a native speaker without strain on either side, and interview in German for a job you actually want.

What this level unlocks

  • Professional recognition in regulated professions, including nursing and care work, which normally require B2
  • Ausbildung places in healthcare, where B2 rather than B1 is common
  • The upper language points band on the Opportunity Card table
  • Being hired for a German speaking role rather than only an English speaking one

Not enough for
telc B2 Pflege, the nursing specific examination some employers and licensing bodies ask for, which we do not currently teach.

Which level you need depends on your route rather than on ambition. If you are on the Opportunity Card and need one more point, A2 is usually the cheapest way to get it. If you are heading for an Ausbildung in healthcare, plan for B2 and start now. The Germany work abroad page sets out each route in full.

What the weeks actually look like

This is the A1 batch, week by week. A2, B1 and B2 follow the same rhythm over 10 or 12 weeks: build the structures, use them out loud, then examine. It is built to be survivable alongside a full time job.
  1. Weeks 1 to 2

    Sounds, then sentences

German pronunciation properly, before habits set. The alphabet, numbers, and enough sentence structure to introduce yourself and ask a question that gets an answer.

  2. Weeks 3 to 4

    Cases, the part everyone dreads

Nominative and accusative, taught through use rather than tables. Articles and gender, which is the thing that takes longest and is worth starting early.

  3. Weeks 5 to 6

    Everyday transactions

Shopping, directions, appointments, times and dates. Every session includes paired speaking, because a level you cannot speak is not a level.

  4. Weeks 7 to 8

    Writing and listening

Short messages and forms, and listening to German spoken at normal speed rather than at classroom speed.

  5. Week 9

    First mock examination

A full mock in the Goethe A1 or telc A1 format, all four skills, marked with written feedback on where the marks went.

  6. Week 10

Second mock, then book the examination

A second full mock, targeted work on the weakest skill, and guidance on booking with an examination centre.

Your trainer

You know who is teaching before you pay

  • Your German trainer

    German A1 to B2

    • Holds C1 or above, certified
    • Teaches to the Goethe and telc exam formats

German is the single best predictor of whether a move to Germany goes well, and it is the thing people start too late. Teaching runs to the exam format from the first week, because A1 with no certificate is not a qualification.
