Which English test should I take?

It depends on who is going to read the score. Immigration authorities and universities each publish their own list of accepted tests, and those lists change. As a rough guide: IELTS is accepted almost everywhere, PTE suits people who prefer computer marking and a fast result, the Duolingo English Test is the cheapest and quickest but is not accepted everywhere, CELPIP is for Canada, and TOEFL is strong for the United States. Always check the current requirement on the university's or the government's own page before you book anything. We will help you check, and we will not tell you a test is accepted when we have not seen it in writing.

Is language coaching online only?

Yes. Live online classes in small batches, not recorded videos you watch alone. Every class is also recorded and available to you for six months afterwards, so a missed class is not a lost class.

How big are the batches?

No more than 12 for the English tests and no more than 10 for German. Speaking practice does not work in a room of forty people.

What if I miss classes because of work?

Every class is recorded and stays available to you for six months. Trainers hold a doubt clearing slot each week for people catching up. If you miss more than a third of a batch we will tell you honestly that you would be better off repeating it, and we will let you join the next batch at half price.

What IELTS is, and what it is used for

IELTS is an English test used by universities, employers and immigration authorities across the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and much of Europe. It comes in two versions: Academic, normally for university admission, and General Training, normally for immigration and work.

Speaking is with a human examiner and writing is marked by a human, which matters. It rewards genuine quality and punishes memorised templates, which is the opposite of how a computer marked test behaves.

It is the safe default when you are applying to several places at once, because the acceptance list is the widest of any test on this page.

What the weeks actually look like

This is the plan the batch follows. It is built to be survivable alongside a full time job, which is the constraint most course outlines ignore.

Weeks 1 to 2
Diagnostic and reading
A full diagnostic test in week one so you know your real starting band. Reading technique, skimming against scanning, and the question types most people lose marks on.
Weeks 3 to 4
Writing task 1 and task 2
The public band descriptors, read properly, then structure work. Two marked submissions a week with a band estimate and the exact reason for it.
Weeks 5 to 6
Listening and speaking
Accent range in the listening section, and the three speaking parts with recorded practice. Your two one to one speaking sessions sit here.
Week 7
Full mock under timed conditions
A complete test on a real timetable, marked against the band descriptors, followed by a session on where the marks actually went.
Week 8
Fix the weakest section, then book
Targeted work on whichever section your mocks say is holding your overall band down, plus test day logistics.
