What TOEFL is, and what it is used for

TOEFL iBT is an English test run by ETS, delivered on a computer, and accepted by universities in the United States and in most other study destinations.

What makes it different is the integrated tasks: you read a passage, listen to a lecture, and then write or speak about both together. People who prepare only for standalone essay writing walk into these and lose marks they did not need to lose.

Marking is a mix of automated scoring and human raters.

What the weeks actually look like

This is the plan the batch follows. It is built to be survivable alongside a full time job, which is the constraint most course outlines ignore.

  1. Weeks 1 to 2

    Diagnostic and reading

    A full diagnostic so you know your starting score per section. Academic reading at speed, and the inference questions that decide the section.

  2. Weeks 3 to 4

    Listening and note taking

    Lecture length listening with a note taking system you will actually use in the test, because the integrated tasks depend on it.

  3. Weeks 5 to 6

    Integrated speaking and writing

    The tasks that combine reading, listening and production. This is the block that moves scores most, and it is why the course is eight weeks rather than four.

  4. Week 7

    Full mock on a timed interface

    A complete test in one sitting, because stamina is a real factor in a test this long.

  5. Week 8

    Targeted repair and booking

    Work on your weakest section, plus how score reporting to universities works and what it costs.

    • CELTA, DELTA or equivalent teaching qualification
    • Has sat the test they teach, at the band they teach to

    Trainers here teach the test they have personally sat, because band descriptors read very differently once you have been marked against them. Batches stay small enough that speaking practice is actually possible.
